Day 10
Grace that Endures
Lamentations 3:22: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Two gray-haired, lifelong friends reminiscing about days gone by. An old, worn Bible that looks its age after years of use. Two young lovers married in a weathered, tired church building with hopes that their shared passion will last as long as this cathedral from yesteryear.
This is what we want. We want relationships that last forever, through thick and thin. We hold to promises that we can base our life on. We want to sing melodies to outlive the lyrics because they point us to the God of all grace. We want a God whose love will never fade and whose word will never change no matter how many years may pass.
Our hopes for faith that endures the test of time and trial materialize with every new day. Grace is the work of God that makes this happen (1 Corinthians 15:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:12-16), but His faithfulness is what we experience day by day.
And as sure as the sun rises so is the faithfulness of our God. Our faith may waver today. But God’s faithfulness will never fade (Lamentations 3:22). Our trust may vacillate. But God will always remain trustworthy (Hebrews 10:23). Our word may not be so sure, but God’s Word remains forever (1 Peter 1:25). God’s work of grace endures because He is the God of all grace who never changes (John 1:16: James 1:17; 4:6).
So, when we meet that old friend, we see the faithfulness of God in a familiar smile that has endured a lifetime. When we walk into an old sanctuary that once echoed with the voices of the faithful, we are reminded that we too still stand under grace that gives us strength. When we find ourselves opening up that weathered Bible again; when we pray another prayer again; when we sing a new song again; when we walk into a house of worship again; when we rise up from bed again to face a brand new day, we experience the faithfulness of God all over again because of the grace that always endures the test of time.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me that your grace endures every test I face today. Your grace at work in me today will position me to experience your faithfulness. I believe I will see your goodness today as I live. I believe your grace will affect me today even as every person I encounter will be affected by your grace. Thank you for your mercy today that began anew with the rising of this morning’s sun. Amen.
